Topics for sessions

Conference topics:

1. Occupational surveillance and risk assessment related to work landscape

Description:
This session focuses on the changing landscape of work and its implications for occupational health and safety. It will explore how emerging risks - driven by climate change, technological innovation, globalization, and evolving industries - are being identified, monitored, and assessed. Topics may include occupational hazard surveillance, occupational exposure assessment and sentinel surveillance, monitoring of the changes in work settings, and complex interactions between work, ecosystems, and society. Contributions that examine innovative methods in risk assessment or surveillance strategies across diverse occupational sectors are especially welcome.

2. Environmental Exposure Assessment and Human Biomonitoring

Description:
The focus of this session is to present research on innovative methods developed to identify and manage risks in the environment that mainly concern the general population, vulnerable groups (elderly, children, pregnant women, etc.). Topics may include human biomonitoring techniques, environmental and biological sampling, exposome research, sentinel surveillance systems, environmental risk assessment strategies, health forecasting or interdisciplinary frameworks for anticipating and mitigating harm.

3. Signs, early effects and diseases related to exposure

Description:
This session explores the link between environmental and occupational exposures and their early biological effects, warning signs, and disease outcomes. Contributions may include studies determining novel biomarkers to detect and characterize adverse effects of pollutants, hazardous chemicals, or emerging contaminants. The session encourages research that helps identify multi-omics signatures, subclinical effects, early disease markers, and mechanisms of action, aiming to improve early intervention and risk mitigation related to the exposure.

4. One Health, Sustainable Ecosystems and the Environment

Description:
This session examines how integrated environment and health assessments support progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through a One Health approach. Emphasizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and ecosystem health - particularly in African contexts - topics may include clean water and sanitation, climate resilience, biodiversity protection, sustainable agriculture, and cross-sectoral policy integration.

5. Protection and Safety at work

This session covers innovations and research on safety approaches and protective measures applied in the work settings (industries, companies, farm fields, construction sites), to reduce workplace hazards. Topics include safety design and innovations, action plans, performance against chemical, biological, and physical risks, ergonomic considerations, smart technologies, and strategies to improve training, compliance, and safety culture across work settings.

6. Public Engagement and Citizen Science for Healthy, Resilient, and Sustainable Urban Environments

Description:
This session focuses on participatory approaches that actively involve citizens, workers, and communities in addressing challenges related to the health, environment and work, within rapidly urbanizing contexts. Contributions may highlight urban air and water quality monitoring, health awareness campaigns, co-created research and nature-based solutions on sustainable city living, climate resilience initiatives, and the democratization of data to promote healthier, more resilient, and sustainable urban environments.

7. Wellbeing through Healthy Living Environments and Work Settings

Description:
This session examines the intersection between work, mental and physical wellbeing, and environmental conditions. Topics may include models developed for mental health and wellbeing, as well as organizational culture, work-life balance, and designs for health in built settings and working environments.

8. Digital and Technological Innovations for Safer, Healthy and Greener Future

Description:
Highlighting cutting-edge tools and platforms, this session explores how technology, including AI, sensors, remote sensing, wearables, modeling and data systems are transforming health protection in both occupational and environmental contexts. Applications may range from pollution modeling to smart infrastructure and digital twins.
